Ann Shelton Beth

Painting has been an interest of Anns since she was quite young. She was lucky to grow up in Santa Barbara, and benefitted from the best teachers. In the mid 80's she lived in the Midwest, where she was fascinated by the big skies, clouds and open spaces.

She began painting landscapes there, which she exhibited at the Unity Gallery before returning to Santa Barbara 1991, where she adapted to painting the coastal landscape. But the open spaces of the Midwest have continued to influence her work, to give her paintings a feeling of space and quietness. Regarding the abstract work; She owes the development of that interest to Jim Armstrong, who was a brilliant abstract painter in Santa Barbara. With his encouragement, she branched out to include that element in her work.
